As a true grassroots supporter, mysportswear is delighted to hear from our customers when they go the extra mile and do something extra special.
It is easy to forget the impact football has on our lives especially on our children. Football brings communities together, it brings our children experiences that they may never have again and it’s a huge learning opportunity.
Grassroots football is also about the volunteers and the hard work and effort that the thousands of coaches, managers and parents put in to provide these experiences – these are the heroes that need to plan and prepare, offer their time and commitment and in most instances beg and plea for sponsorship and take part in fundraising challenges.
When mysportswear were contacted by Blackburn United to supply their extensive range of kits, tracksuits, polos and jackets, we knew they were planning something special with such a big request. It was soon apparent this club was planning to go the extra mile (nearly 3000 to be precise) and were taking two teams (under 9’s) to compete in the Barcelona Cup.
Held in Salou (south of Barcelona) the FootballCup Barcelona is an international youth football tournament of different ages – designed to provide memorable days of football – on and off the pitch. Hosted by the Spanish Football Federation, over 100 teams from 20 countries participate in the tournament.
Head Coach Brian Smillie is responsible for one of the teams and was keen to comment on the trip to Barcelona “It’s something we have done before and it’s a great physical test for our teams. We are immensely proud of our club and as one of the leading grassroots clubs in Scotland, it’s great to challenge ourselves against other top quality teams from around Europe”
The whole trip including accommodation and travel cost over £20,000 and took a huge amount of commitment from the parents and children, with a huge amount of fundraising required. As well as the football tournament, the trip included taking the teams to visit the Nou Camp and a theme park so everyone had some fun time as well as the serious tournament business.
As a club with high standards and values, we wanted to look professional and we equipped all our players and coaches with new strips, tracksuits and leisurewear – all personalised with our sponsors details.
“It was a pleasure working with the team at mysportswear who equipped us with Joma teamwear – everyone was delighted with the quality and service received” added Brian.
Whilst the tournament proved a real challenge both Blackburn United teams represented themselves particularly well with impressive performances against teams from Finland, Canada and Germany.
Huge credit must go to Blackburn United for giving their children a lifetime experience, not many of us will ever experience a true international football tournament, a trip to the Nou Camp or a trip overseas. No doubt there was a huge amount of hard work, fundraising and organisation to be done – and everyone at Blackburn should be applauded.
